GAP Year

GAP Year abroad in Spain

When considering taking a gap year abroad in Spain, it is no surprise that it will be a decision that your future self will thank you for…no matter your individual goals! Whether you are looking to get ready for college, see the world, learn a new language, or simply find yourself, a gap year abroad can be a worthwhile way to achieve just that. Here are some of the top benefits taking a gap year abroad in Spain:

Credit towards your future education

Taking a gap year abroad in Spain before continuing with your education can be a great way to recharge after finishing high school and before starting college. You will have the opportunity to develop positive skillsets that are an attractive attribute to your college application and future resume. You will standout to other applicants by knowing another language, having developed your extracurricular activities and demonstrate a high level of independence by going abroad on your own. It is also important to know that this experience in no way “sets you back” academically. Students who take gap years before starting college have even been proven to have a higher academic performance. Also, taking a gap year can be beneficial to your second chance at being accepted to your dream school if you didn´t receive the acceptance letter you were hoping for the first time.

Learn a new language

Our world is becoming increasingly globalized. This means that only speaking one language just doesn´t cut it anymore. There is no better way to learn a new language or perfect a language you may speak than being immersed within a culture of that language. In order to have the most enriched learning experience, choosing a program that offers a homestay and opportunities to make friends within your destination are key. You may also have the opportunity to study the language formally in a traditional classroom setting depending on your level and your language goal. However, the best way to improve is to go out with the locals and practice, practice, practice!

Travel experience

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of a gap year abroad is having the leisure of traveling and visiting new countries while you are not studying. Whether it be the backpacking route or marvelling at the Eiffel Tower, you will have many more opportunities to travel freely than you would if you were already enrolled in university. If you choose to take a gap year in Europe, for example, the transportation systems are superb. Affordable flights, trains and buses as well as short distances between various countries make travel very accessible. However, in the big picture, travelling will enhance your resilience, self-discovery and self-awareness. “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer” – Liz Carlson.

Personal Development

You are at the perfect moment in life to embark on a journey of self-discovery. If you are feeling burnt-out or stuck after taking exams and applying to colleges, a gap year abroad can be the perfect option for you to revitalize and refresh before taking your next step. This is a great opportunity to rediscover your strengths and weaknesses. You may even discover things about yourself that you never even knew! Explore your passions, develop hard and soft skills, and reflect on your goals. The growth in personal development during an experience like this one are limitless.

Independence

It might seem like a big leap to go out into the world on your own. But similar to many experiences in life, you won´t know until you try it. Imagine the sense of independence and self-confidence you´ll develop after navigating a new culture, language and country before even attending college! The feeling is liberating, and you will feel a sense of empowerment. However, remember that you won´t ever be alone. You will inevitably improve your social skills by meeting others in your program, their staff, and of course, the locals! By taking a gap year, your newly gained confidence and sense of independence will prepare you for taking your next step in life.
